Dandenong Civic building

Junior Mayor

Greater Dandenong has appointed a Junior Mayor since 2019 – it's one way Council celebrates its youngest citizens, acknowledging their role in society, and encouraging them to participate in community and civic life.

Greater Dandenong Council has been committed to children’s participation for a long time, receiving recognition by UNICEF as a Child Friendly City back in in 2015.

This initiative aims to empower young voices in Greater Dandenong. Being part of the Junior Mayor program fosters a sense of responsibility and encourages children to give their voice to issues that matter to them and make a positive impact in our community. It also helps children develop a better understanding of local government, it’s role and function within the community.

As Junior Mayor, students have the unique opportunity to assist our local Mayor, gaining insights into community leadership and opportunities to build their confidence and presentation skills.

Congratulations, Gemma Durakovic in Grade 6 from at Keysborough Gardens Primary School, the City of Greater Dandenong’s new Junior Mayor for 2024.
