Calling all emerging writers

Alice Bishop

Emerging Writers' Festival (EWF) is back for its 18th year from 16-26 June, and Greater Dandenong Libraries will bring the local workshops straight to your home via online events.

Each year, the festival brings writers, editors, publishers and literary performers together with the community for an essential part of Australia’s literary calendar.

To ensure the comfort and safety of artists and attendees amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Emerging Writers’ Festival is moving the 2021 festival online.

Originally planned to be held in Greater Dandenong Libraries, the Emerging Writer's Festival provides members of the community with an opportunity to access a key, educational and creative opportunity for all. By offering the same programs online, the community will not miss out on this exceptional event due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The festival develops, nurtures and promotes Australia’s new writing talent, creating platforms for connecting writing communities and their audiences. Featuring two workshops and a spoken word performance, these fantastic free activities are not to be missed.

Members of the community are encouraged to join online for the 11 days of celebration, creation and learning with dazzling performances, spaces for connection, opportunities for professional development, and interactive, provoking discussions.
The 2021 festival will showcase the voices of tomorrow with more than fifty digital events, and will feature all new performances, projects and professional development opportunities.
Greater Dandenong’s offerings include the Short n Sweet Short Story Workshop on Thursday 17 June from 6.30pm, covering how to write a short story that sticks with a reader long after its finale. Hosted by Alice Bishop, author of 'A Constant Hum', this workshop will be delivered via Zoom.

On the same evening over on the EWF YouTube live-stream, After Dark will feature spoken word performances featuring some of the best up-and-coming literary stars: Wai Mun Mah, Jesse Oliver, Wallis Prophet, Penny Smits and Christy Tan at 7.15pm.

On Thursday 24 June at 6.30pm join the online workshop A Body of Writing with Sam Van Zweden, author of 'Eating With My Mouth Open'. Sam will discuss what it means to write about food and the body and how they intertwine with memory. This session will be delivered via Zoom.
