Council Announces Demolition of Local Building

PEP building

Greater Dandenong City Council will demolish a building known as the Precinct Energy Plant. We have discovered structural deficiencies that mean it is not suitable for public use.

This is a disappointing outcome, as we were working towards opening the building as a creative arts space for our community.

The decision to demolish the building is based on structural engineering reports that have confirmed the building may not withstand a significant earthquake. The likelihood of this is very, very low. However, in the interest of the surrounds and public safety, we have taken the decision to demolish the building.

The issue with the building dates back to its construction when the site was owned by Vic Urban. When we acquired the building from Development Victoria in 2020, our due diligence reports said it would be suitable to be re-purposed for public use. This has turned out not to be the case.

I want to assure the community that the building is sturdy and has remained in good condition for nearly 13 years since it was built. We expect it will remain so until we can commence a methodical, safe demolition.

We are in the processing of advising neighbouring landowners, occupiers and all relevant stakeholders. Demolition is expected to commence within three months.

Any decisions about the future use of the PEP site will be made at the proper time, after appropriate processes.
