Engaging with the community is often perceived as a commendable pursuit, but its advantages extend well beyond the immediate act of participation.

Drawing from my personal experiences, I have come to recognise the significant impact that active involvement in community activities, such as volunteering at local events, joining community groups or participating in cultural celebrations, can have on both personal and professional development.

Upon my arrival in Australia, one of the foremost challenges was overcoming the fear of losing previous accomplishments and the belief that attaining substantial positions could have been attainable. However, it is crucial to understand that every individual who has come to this country was once a newcomer, much like myself and countless others. Today, many of these immigrants have ascended to prominent roles in business and government. Their success is a testament to the power of perseverance and adaptability, qualities that we all possess and can harness in our journey to success.

Despite my qualifications being obtained abroad and not entirely aligned with Australian standards, I was able to secure a reputable position through relentless effort. Networking emerged as a vital component in expediting my journey to success. Proactively introducing oneself, attending industry events and courageously engaging with individuals in various settings can create numerous opportunities. Your unique skills and capabilities will be known once you take the initiative to showcase them.

Starting afresh in a new country can paradoxically become a strength in managing one's life. For instance, explaining my background to a case manager at a refugee settlement organisation led to a job offer. By accumulating local work experience and forging relationships across diverse sectors, I progressed in my career and eventually was recruited by the Department of Education. This journey is a testament to the value of local work experience and relationships in career progression, offering hope and optimism for the future.

With a robust background in international organisations, media and academia from my home country, I was able to reposition myself effectively within Australia, carving out a path for future success. Others with similar experiences can likewise seize these opportunities. It is imperative to recognise that thriving in Australia requires adaptation to local standards. This includes understanding and respecting local customs, learning the language and embracing cultural practices. Embracing these norms is essential for a seamless integration into the new environment.

Additionally, numerous free educational opportunities are available for Australian residents. We should leverage these resources and explore alternative career avenues. The realm of possibilities is boundless; with dedication, a strategic plan and persistent pursuit of objectives, one can evolve into a well-rounded and valuable contributor to oneself, one's family, and society.
