Connection People through a Love of Food

Rampal Sharma has positive things to say as he reflects on being a trader in the Little India, Dandenong.

'Little India', is a home away from home for Melbournians originating from the India diaspora".

"It is a real slice of slice for people who are feeling homesick" shared Mr Sharma. "That's why I love it so much and why it is so special".

Originally from the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, Mr Sharma immigrated to Australia in 1998.

The shop provides customers with a unique tasting experience. From sweet Indian delicacies such as gulab jamun, to savory dishes such as Chicken Madras and the ever-fragrant Tandoori Chicken. Calcutta Sweets is a one-stop-shop for tastebuds in need of tantalising.

When asked what makes his store different from others in the precinct, Mr Sharma proudly explained that his store unites people.

"We serve Indian, Pakistani, Afghani, Australian, Greek and Italian customers. My shop is diverse and brings people together."

Mr Sharma tenderly recollects a time where he served a young Greek family Indian food for the very first time. "Alex and Con stumbled upon my shop with their twins having never tried Indian food before". The chance meeting with the Angelos family that fateful day, gave way to a beautiful, long-lasting friendship that has stood the test of time. "I have watched the Angelos children grow up and they have come into my shop to buy Chicken Tikka and Lamb cutlets more times that I can count."

"My shop has bought me much success and now I am content. I take a break once a week to look after my health and spend time with my family because I couldn't have achieved what I have without their support".
