In response to concerns regarding community safety and tension arising from the name of the Thomas Street precinct, Mayor Cr Jim Memeti recently brought together a diverse group of community leaders and elders across different backgrounds on 21 February 2025 to promote peace, calm and respect in our community.
They demonstrated great leadership. They shared their pride in the Thomas Street precinct, created by hardworking traders who have worked side by side for more than two decades. They committed to working together to promote unity and cohesion to our communities.
Our Council meeting this week affirmed our commitment to respond appropriately at our Council meeting this week, we noted that there was never a formal community consultation and naming process for the precinct. This name has only been used as a marketing and promotional name. The name “Afghan Bazaar” or “Afghan Cultural Bazaar” has never been formally adopted on the Register of Geographic Place Names Victoria. The area is formally named as Thomas Street, Dandenong.
At our meeting, Council formally acknowledged the diverse and genuinely held views in the community regarding the name ‘Afghan Bazaar’ and that while the term ‘Afghan’ is widely understood in the broader Australian community to include all people originating from Afghanistan, not everyone understands the word that way.
We noted that the name “Afghan Bazaar” has never been formally adopted on the Register of Geographic Place Names Victoria, and the area remains formally named as Thomas St, Dandenong. “Afghan Bazaar” was a term adopted by Council used for marketing and economic development promotion to the broader Melbourne community to attract tourists and visitors.
We acknowledged the deep and rich contribution of the Hazara community and all ethnic groups from Afghanistan to Greater Dandenong including in community and business life.
We acknowledge the ethnic and religious persecution of Hazaras in Afghanistan and other countries over many decades. We acknowledge that people from Afghanistan of all ethnicities have suffered from decades of conflict and violence.
We affirmed that everyone in the City of Greater Dandenong should feel a sense of belonging and inclusion, and that the formal naming of public places should be undertaken through proper processes that seek to build consensus, not divide the community.
We noted with concern reports of some ethnic divisions in the community, including amongst younger people and endorsed the Mayor’s initiative to bring together community leaders who issued a signed, written statement calling for peace, calm and respect.
We noted that the CEO has formally requested external resources and funding to engage a thorough and independent consultation process to objectively examine the multiple issues surrounding this matter and provide recommendations for a constructive resolution. This initiative seeks to bridge divisions and enhance links to the broader Australian community by actively engaging youth, women, community leaders and wider public participation. Consideration should also be given to collaboration with relevant neighbouring Councils, State and Commonwealth governments.
We also requested the CEO to provide further advice to Council on a broader, longer-term community development initiative, facilitating dialogue between the various parts of the community of people of all ethnic backgrounds in Afghanistan living in the City of Greater Dandenong.
Further details on the stages of this community development initiative will be shared in the coming weeks.

ما تأکید کردیم که همه مردم در شهر دندینانگِ بزرگ باید احساس تعلق و مشارکت داشته باشند و نامگذاری رسمی اماکن عمومی باید از طریق پروسه های مناسبی انجام شود که باعث ایجاد وحدت شود، نه اینکه جامعه را از همدیگر جدا کند.
ما گزارش‌هایی از بعضی اختلاف نظرهای قومی در جامعه، از جمله در میان جوانان را متوجه شدیم که مایه نگرانی ما شد. و شورا ابتکار من را برای گردهم‌آوردن رهبران جامعه که در آن یک بیانیه‌ای کتبی امضا-شده صادر نموده و خواستار صلح، آرامش و احترام شدند را تایید کردند.
ما میدانیم که مدیراجرایی (CEO) به طور رسمی منابع بیرونی و بودجه درخواست کرده است تا یک پروسه مشاوره کامل و مستقل را جهت بررسی عملی موضوعات متعدد پیرامون این موضوع و ارائه توصیه هایی برای یک راه حل سازنده ارائه دهد. این ابتکار با مشوره فعالانه با جوانان، زنان، رهبران جامعه و مشارکت عمومی گسترده تر، به دنبال از بین بردن اختلاف نظرها و تقویت پیوندها با جامعه گسترده تر استرالیا میباشد. همچنین باید به همکاری با شوراهای همجوار مربوطه، حکومت های ایالتی و کامنویلت توجه شود.
ما همچنین از مدیر اجرایی تقاضا کردیم تا در مورد یک طرح توسعه اجتماعی گسترده تر و بلند-مدت، تسهیل نمودن گفتگو بین اقشار مختلف جامعه از تمام اقوام افغانستان ساکن در شهر دندینانگِ بزرگ، به شورا مشوره دهد.
جزئیات بیشتر راجع به مراحل این طرح توسعه اجتماعی در هفته های آینده به اشتراک گذاشته خواهند شد.
