Plastic Free July 2024 - DIY Air Freshener

household chemicals

Air fresheners are expensive and often contain harsh chemicals Plus, they’re generally not refillable, which means you need to buy a new bottle every time – so this recipe is a great way to reduce waste and create your own signature scent for home.

DIY Air Freshener

Equipment needed:

  • Fine mist spray bottle approx. 120ml (I just refill my Orange Power bottle, but any small bottle will do).

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon witch hazel/vodka/ or isopropyl alcohol (available from the chemist or supermarket)
  • 30 drops essential oil
  • About ½ cup demineralised/distilled water (available from the supermarket. Tap water is also fine but demineralised/distilled water lasts longer)

Method:

  1. Add witch hazel/vodka/isopropyl alcohol to the spray bottle.
  2. Add your essential oils of choice.
  3. Swirl the bottle about 10 times to combine the oil with the other liquid.
  4. Top the bottle up with water, leaving a little room at the top for shaking.

To use:

Shake well and spray into the air. Usually, 2-3 pumps is sufficient.
