SHE of Mind and Body

A woman crouched inside a hole in a white, textured wall.

Celebrating over more than two decades, the SHE exhibition returns to the Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre this year to celebrate women artists.

In SHE of Mind and Body, textile artists Dans Bain, Anna Farago, Neroli Henderson, Georgia MacGuire, Chaco Kato, Vonda Keji, Caroline Phillips, Nusra Qureshi, Ema Shin and Kate V M Sylvester explore the complicated aspects of being a woman today.

This exhibition showcases the depth of textiles as a medium and its ability to speak without words. While there was a time when the medium was considered merely a form of craft, textiles have more recently been placed at the forefront of contemporary art.

Feminist art of the 60s and 70s took textiles out of the domestic setting and put them into public spaces that were considered traditionally masculine.

SHE is recognised as one of the longest continually running all-women art shows in Australia.

The SHE of Mind and Body Writing Competition complements the 2023 exhibition, where writers were invited to submit an original piece of up to 500 words based on (and including) one of the titles used in previous SHE exhibitions.

A zine will be produced to complement the exhibition, sharing a selection of entries from the writing competition.

The exhibition will celebrate International Women’s Day on Wednesday 8 March (5.30pm-7.30pm) with a special evening featuring Greater Dandenong City Council Mayor, Cr Eden Foster, some of the artists, performances and a DJ playing female anthems.

SHE of Mind and Body is on display until Friday 31 March.

Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre is open Tuesday to Friday, 12pm-4pm.
