Springvale Community Hub Profile - Elena Sheldon

Did you know Springvale Community Hub (SCH) has an Advisory Committee made up of local community members?

Meet Elena, a member of the Springvale Community Hub Committee and Manager of the Springvale Learning and Activities Centre.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

This year I will celebrate 20 years in the role of the Manager of the Springvale Learning and Activities Centre. I hold a Bachelor of Education and Linguistics and Diplomas in Business Management, Community Development, VET and Training Design.

My passion is supporting people in the community to reach their potential in education and employment. In my free time I enjoy cats, cooking and gardening.

What motivated you to join the SCH Advisory Committee?

Building connections between community stakeholders is very important. I expressed interest in joining the SCH Advisory Committee to extend the opportunities for participation for the local community. It was a great opportunity to meet new people on the Committee, reconnect with old friends and learn something new.

What do you think is the role of Springvale Community Hub in the community?

Springvale Community Hub (SCH) is a great asset to Springvale. The Community waited for many years for improved facilities. SCH provides an important link between the local community and local government, raises awareness and engages local people in the decision-making process. It is also a friendly place where anyone can find meaningful activities and meet new people.

What advice would you give to someone looking to get involved with the community?

Identify your interests first and approach SCH, SLAC or any Neighbourhood House for information or advice. In most cases you will be connected with a real person or a group of people. Check the Greater Dandenong website for information and attend community events and gatherings. Participate in community consultations.

What is your favourite place to visit or activity to do in Springvale?

The Temples, the shops, the food, and the community. I could spend hours browsing the shops discovering interesting food items and having conversations on how to use them. I learnt so much about food over 20 years working in Springvale and can still find new things every time I am shopping.

Can you share a fun fact about yourself that people might not know?

I am scared of toilets with automatic doors. I always wonder how Anton Chekhov, Bernard Shaw or William Shakespeare would have used them in their comedies.
