Meet Gaye, a member of the Springvale Community Hub Committee and the long-time volunteer face behind the monthly Urban Harvest at the Hub.
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I have lived in Greater Dandenong longer than I have in my childhood suburb. Where has that time gone.
I believe in getting involved in local affairs and activities enhances your experience of being a resident. I have lived, worked and played on many levels. I have been involved in and feel my grass roots approach to life here has given me a wealth of local knowledge that I am able to apply to many aspects especially at a committee level.
What motivated you to join the SCH Advisory Committee?
I feel we need a cross section of residents to oversee all our community hubs and for me I was interested in being part of the advisory committee as an extension of my local networks. I encourage all residents to become involved in our two new hubs which will operate in our city in the future.
What do you think is the role of Springvale Community Hub in the community?
It is a place of gathering with facilities that allow individuals, small and large groups to congregate and participate in worthwhile programs.
What advice would you give to someone looking to get involved with the community?
You never know what you bring to the "community table" with your strengths and interests and you never know where your involvement will lead you or the wealth of information you will gain. We will always need community people and volunteers to help guide council plans for the future, so give it a go.
What is your favourite place to visit or activity to do in Springvale?
Extremely proud of Burden Park, as I was part of the team that planned and built the playground. Build it and they will come, which it true every day since. It was built in 1994 by community members over five days. It is a wonderful community asset.
Can you share a fun fact about yourself that people might not know?
Oh, do I divulge my secrets? People see me as a problem solver.
