Did you know Springvale Community Hub (SCH) has an Advisory Committee made up of local community members?
Meet Zoë, a member of the Springvale Community Hub Committee and the long-time volunteer face behind the monthly clothes swap at the Hub.
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I moved here in 2018 from Canada to live with my children, my partner, and my wonderful in-laws who so generously share their home with us.
My days are spent learning with my kids (I home educate my children), connecting with community, making friends and nurturing relationships, gardening, playing music, building skills and being creative in general.
What motivated you to join the SCH Advisory Committee?
Ultimately, I’d like to influence the greater community to think more consciously about our natural environment, so by joining the Hub committee I thought perhaps I could bring ideas and suggestions to the table that reflect stronger ecological values. I also see it as an opportunity to learn new things and make social connections.
What do you think is the role of Springvale Community Hub in the community?
I think the role of the Hub is to be an easy, free, safe place for our very diverse community to come and connect with others, while also delivering an array of opportunity for people to try and learn new things. The library is a key asset to the education the Hub provides.
What advice would you give to someone looking to get involved with the community?
Get out there! I think you’ll be surprised by how much you benefit overall just from being around others who are doing good things for the community. Try finding a role that reflects your core values, and the work will come easy, the friendships even easier.
What is your favourite place to visit or activity to do in Springvale?
Like most people surely, my favourite activity to do in Springvale is eat delicious food…But the next best thing is the Springvale Community Hub because there we get to do fun stuff like watch movies on the big screen outside, meet up with our friends at the playground and water-play area, see cool performances, get a zillion library books, eat picnic lunches in the shade, attend cultural festivals, ride our bikes…the list goes on, it’s a really great place and we’re so lucky to have it.
Can you share a fun fact about yourself that people might not know?
I basically live in a restaurant, because my Vietnamese mother-in-law is a top notch cook of traditional foods.
My favourites are Bo Boung, Banh Hoi, Canh Chua, and of course the famous Pho. Amongst many more.
