One of Council’s important roles is to educate the community about waste and why it is important not to litter.
Across 11 schools in Greater Dandenong, 438 students recently took part in a drawing competition to create an anti-litter poster to teach adults why we should look after our environment.
Minaret Primary School’s Miss Shamirah and Sister Jancy were instrumental in encouraging competition entries from their students.
Their school received a complimentary tumbling compost bin so students can practice composting their food scraps instead of sending them to landfill. Their food scraps and garden waste turn into a natural fertiliser to enrich their school’s soil and help feed their worms.
Minaret Primary School’s Executive Principal, Mohammed Taksim said: “I’d like to thank Greater Dandenong City Council and their Waste Management Team for this valuable initiative. The competition helped our students understand the importance of protecting our environment and encourages them all to take action. We were honoured to be visited by Cr Jim Memeti and the team, their presence and the presentation of awards inspired our students. We are also grateful for the compost bin as a gift and hope we will be able to share some fresh produce in the future”.
The drawings submitted were incredible with 11 students winning prizes, and their schools winning a worm farm or compost bin.
The anti-litter poster entries received by Council will be used to teach our community about the importance of looking after our planet. See our winning posters.
