Support to stay active

Physio and participant

People aged 65 years and over who need assistance to remain living independently will now have access to affordable exercise classes run by a qualified physiotherapist in Greater Dandenong.

Active Physio classes run in Dandenong, Springvale and Noble Park will assist participants to regain and maintain their strength and resilience, remain socially connected and live independently. The program includes simple resistance and weight bearing exercises under the guidance of a physiotherapist and program support workers.

Mayor Angela Long said many people in this age bracket have reported feeling more isolated since the start of the pandemic, and this is a great way to boost physical and mental health and wellbeing.

“If you’re feeling like you’ve lost confidence and mobility during the COVID-19 restrictions, you’re not alone. There is support available and our Community Care team have a range of options,” Cr Long said.

The program is designed to be introduced at an early stage to prevent older people having to rely on more intensive services such as a Home Care Package or residential aged care accommodation.

“Independence is sometimes the only thing older people may feel they can control as certain aspects of their life being to change with age. Maintaining independence promotes a sense of achievement that for many people generates a great sense of self-worth and wellbeing.”

Classes cater for people of all abilities, with individual support and transport also available to help build confidence for those who feel unsteady or at risk of falls.

“Our team offers a friendly, welcoming environment where you can meet and socialise with others. I’d encourage anyone over the age of 65 to consider booking in and enjoying the benefits of this great program.”
