Voices Behind the Door is a new podcast, developed by the City of Greater Dandenong with Wayss, a specialist family violence services provider. It has been partly funded by a grant from the Municipal Association of Victoria for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
The stories in this podcast share the perspectives of various people. The stories give a voice to what happens behind closed doors.
The issues discussed in the podcast are very sensitive and at times, confronting. If you or someone you know is experiencing family violence, there are organisations who can help you. They are listed below.
To protect the privacy of family violence survivors, some of their stories are read by others.
Episode 1 - First Responders
In Episode 1 of 'Voices Behind the Door', we hear from the police. For the police, family violence is a major part of their job. With around half of call-outs as a response to family violence incidents, the impact is great. In this interview, we hear about the mental readiness required. It also covers the impact family violence has on first responders.
Episode 2 - Emma's Story
In this episode of 'Voices Behind the Door', we consider the stories we tell children to keep them safe. Children hear, children witness, and children can be the victims of family violence. Experiencing family violence can affect a child’s mental wellbeing and contribute to poorer education outcomes and a range of behavioural issues. Mums often create words and games to shield their children from violence.
Episode 3 - Laila's Story
In this episode of 'Voices Behind the Door', we hear Laila’s story. With the promise of a husband and new life, Laila married and moved to Australia. Here, she was confronted with servitude, abuse and fear. This episode is also available in Dari.
Episode 4 - Sarah's Story
In this episode of 'Voices Behind the Door', Sarah shares her story. Now in her late twenties and a mum of three children, Sarah was young woman who thought she married the man of her dreams only to find out all he wanted to do was to control her. This control quickly turned to violence.
Episode 5 - Champions of Change - Greater Dandenong CEO John Bennie PSM
In this episode of 'Voices Behind the Door', you will from John Bennie PSM, CEO of the City of Greater Dandenong. Council is recognised for its ongoing and proven commitment to preventing violence against women.
