Connecting Creek Corridors for the Sugar Gliders

The Sugar Glider Habitat Enhancement Project will reduce the threat habitat degradation is having on the impact of the population of sugar gliders in the Dandenong area.

Sugar Glider

Sugar gliders are crucial to the ecosystem of the Dandenong Creek however are experiencing a significant drop in numbers as they lack a suitable habitat.

They are important pollinators who are active during the night, gliding from tree to tree in search of nectar. They also disperse seed and are important for insect control.

During the day they sleep in family groups in old tree hollows. Sugar Gliders require hollows formed in trees over 100 years old for nesting.

There is an absence of sufficient numbers of hollow bearing trees so new nest boxes suitable for Sugar Gliders be installed within this project.

The City of Greater Dandenong will facilitate planting of indigenous plants to increase the biodiversity and ecological health of Tirhatuan Park and the Dandenong Creek

This project is funded by the Federal Government through the Communities Environment Program Grants and the City of Greater Dandenong.
