Hollows in older trees are very important for parrots, possums, Kookaburras and Owls.
Fotheringham Reserve runs along the Yarraman Creek and is a significant stand of redgum woodland.
There are large, older tree full of hollows and this area has been the focus of a nesting box program. In fact, each year a pair of kookaburras return to raise their young in a possum nesting box.
This project will involve understorey planting to improve the habitats within the reserve. Healthy bushland provides not only hollows for nesting and shelter but layers of shrubs, grasses and logs and leaf litter. Furthermore, increased shrub and density of the ground level will create habitats for birds, insects, small reptiles, bats and possums.
In addition, an online educational resource for schools will be developed about the importance of hollows and healthy bushland. For an outline of this resource visit Habitat, Hollows and Nesting Boxes.
This project is funded by the Federal Government through the Communities Environment Program Grants and the City of Greater Dandenong.
