Providing Habitat and Shelter for the Migrating Swift Parrot

The Swift Parrot is endangered, with less than 2,000 birds left in the wild.

Swift Parrot

The Dandenong Creek corridor and Falkiner Reserve provides the only continuous north-south flyway across Melbourne’s eastern-suburbs.

Corridors like this are important for the Swift Parrot as a steppingstone within the landscape as the parrots migrate between Tasmanian breeding grounds and primary winter foraging grounds in mainland Australia.

In response to this the City of Greater Dandenong’s Parks Team will focus on planting indigenous habitat at Falkiner Reserve and installing nesting boxes to improve environmental conditions for the Swift Parrot and other animals that call the Dandenong Creek home - even temporarily.

The Swift Parrot is a charismatic species whose plight raises awareness of the conservation problems faced by a diversity of threatened species.

Falkiner Reserve can be accessed by Falkiner Crescent, Leonard Street or Heatherton Road Dandenong. Take a self guided walk through the wetland or take advantage of the bike path.
