New Beginnings Celebration For Local Afghan Community

Harmony Square

The City of Greater Dandenong will host a welcome event for recently arrived community members from Afghanistan at Harmony Square, Dandenong on Sunday 20 February from 11am – 4pm.

Committed to creating an inviting and inclusive city, the free New Beginnings welcome event seeks to connect the Afghan community in the south east region to local arts and culture and provides opportunities for them to learn more about a range of available services like housing, employment, food and material aid.

Mayor Cr Jim Memeti invites everyone to come along to welcome new Afghan community members to Greater Dandenong.

“Social inclusion and community participation are exceptionally important values Council upholds, and it is imperative that we support our newly arrived Afghan community members, so they feel welcome and supported.

“Council is proud that this city is a refugee welcome zone and we hope events like this inspire others to celebrate inclusivity and to extend a helping hand,” said the Mayor.

The event will include children’s activities, a welcome to Country, live performances by Afghan cultural groups and artists, a Halal BBQ, library tours and information from service providers.

The event is also proudly supported by the Board of Imams Victoria, the Drum Theatre, Multicultural Arts Victoria, South East Community Links and Uniting Victoria and Tasmania.

No registrations are required for the event and all COVID safe guidelines will be met to ensure public safety on the day.
