Take a Swing for Charity - the Fun of Golf

The Take a Swing for Charity industry golf day is held in late February each year at a top-notch golf course, most recently at the Victorian Golf Club in Cheltenham.

Players register as teams of four, the perfect recipe for a great deal of fun, camaraderie and competition within and between teams.

The play

Take a Swing uses the Ambrose golf format, ideal for teams with a mixture of golfing prowess and a format that allows teams to score as one. Each team member hits off the tee, the ball in the best position becomes where each player takes their second hit and so on until each ball is in the hole.

Also included are novelty games played at preselected holes. Examples include nearest to the pin, longest drive, eagle hole, magic rope hole and the long putt competition. This may seem a foreign language for golf novices, but your team-mates will explain.

Prizes

There are two major prizes on offer.

The major prize is the Hole-in-One. The lucky (or skilful) winner gets a brand-new car.

A second Putting Prize of $5,000 cash is also up for grabs. This goes to the player who can put the final ball of the day into the hole with a minimum 18 metre put.

For the first time ever in golf day’s 13-year history, the Hole-in-One went off in 2022. Occasional golf player Ben Edmond popped his tee shot into the par three hole at Victoria Golf Club from a distance of 157 metres using his 6-iron. The following month Ben was rewarded with a Nissan X-Trail from Nissan Dandenong valued at over $34,000.

After the tournament

Take a Swing for Charity concludes with a late afternoon dinner and auction at the golf venue – a time for consolidating new friendships, more networking and reflecting on this fun way to support Greater Dandenong’s charitable organisations.
