A vehicle crossing is the part of your driveway that crosses the footpath and nature strip and meets the road. It lets cars and other vehicles enter and exit your property.
Before building or widening a vehicle crossing, you need a vehicle crossing permit. All residential vehicle crossing permit applications must first be assessed before a permit can be issued.
How to apply for a permit
From Friday 1 July 2022, all Vehicle Crossing Permit Applications will need to submitted via an Online Portal (see 'Apply' button below). Council will no longer be accepting paper or email copies of the application form.

Permit conditions and application instructions
- You must pay a non-refundable permit fee when you apply. Fees below.
- Council reserves the right to charge a bond under certain circumstances. The applicant will be contacted directly by Council if this is the case following the review of their application.
- The permit is valid for 12 months from the date Council issues it.
- If you do not get a permit, Council can fine you up to $1000.
- You must have a minimum $10 million public liability insurance. You can get this cover from any insurance company. You need it when you are doing works on or through a road reserve. The policy must be valid for the duration of the permit.
Arranging an inspection
Council requires a compulsory onsite inspection when:
- you have prepared the vehicle crossing for construction
- all excavation works are complete.
What happens with the works are completed
Contact Council to arrange:
- a final inspection, these inspections ensure the construction meets Council standards.
- for industrial, commercial or multi-dwelling developments you also need a town planning permit.

Residential Properties Minimum Requirements
All new vehicle crossing must be constructed in accordance with Council Standard SD300 for Barrier Kerb and Channel or SD301 for Rollover Kerb and Channel or SD306 for Older Type Kerb & Channel. Minimum width at building line is 3.00m.
Industrial/Commercial Properties & Carpark Entrances Minimum Requirements
All new vehicle crossing must be constructed in accordance with Council Standard SD300 for Barrier Kerb and Channel or SD301 for Rollover Kerb and Channel or SD306 for Older Type Kerb and Channel. Minimum width at building line is 3.00m.
