Project Update
The City of Greater Dandenong is undertaking a study on behalf of the Victorian Government to assess the need and feasibility of a community centre for Afghan communities.
A comprehensive stakeholder and community engagement process was undertaken from May to July 2023 involving over 690 participants. The result of this consultation process helped to inform a detailed Needs Analysis, which represents Stage 1 of the feasibility study.
Stage 2 of the study is now underway which involves a detailed Options Analysis and is expected to be completed by early 2024. A summary of the draft report will be released to the public at this time.
Who initiated the study?
The study was initiated by the Victorian State Government consistent with its longstanding recognition and support for multicultural communities in Victoria.
What is Council’s involvement?
Council is facilitating the project on behalf of the State Government and will support and manage the project.
How is the project being funded?
The study is being funded by the State Government through the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.
How will my feedback be used?
Your feedback will help to increase understanding about the needs and interests of the Afghan communities and will help to inform the Feasibility Study.
When will the project be completed?
It is anticipated the study will be completed in October 2024.
What happens next?
The next steps will depend on what the Feasibility Study identifies. This includes whether further action or funding is needed to improve access to services and facilities for Afghan communities.
