Since 2022, Dandenong West community members have been working with the State Government of Victoria and the City of Greater Dandenong to build a more connected community and address crime and safety concerns within inner Dandenong West.
The origins of the group come from residents and traders lobbying for action and the implementation of the Hemmings Street Precinct Action Plan. This plan outlines the importances of both local and state governments to invest in ongoing support of Dandenong West community-led initiatives. An investment which will help enable community relationships and give back a sense of ownership to neighbourhoods. With the intention to improve both perceptions and levels of safety.
The action group meets regularly to discuss key community matters and improvements for the Dandenong West area. In particular they have agreed on three priority projects:
- A community garden for the inner Dandenong West area.
- Community led events which will be held in Hemmings Street Dandenong.
- A project to explore challenges with rooming houses in Dandenong West. This project will focus on meeting the collective needs of community members, rooming house residents and traders. By working authentically with the local communities to formulate solutions.
The Empowering Communities Dandenong West Community Action Group is funded by the State Government’s Empowering Communities Program and supported by the City of Greater Dandenong.
