Project Overview
In 2022, neon feature lighting was installed to shops in the Little India Cultural Precinct in Foster Street, by Melbourne based lighting specialists Electric Confetti.
The neon lighting enlivens the precinct with a curated display of decorative coloured lighting in celebration of its unique Indian cultural offer. Each trader influenced the selection of lighting designs, placement and colours as part of a co-design approach.
The lighting encourages pedestrians to walk and explore the precinct on foot, window gazing and shopping. Increasing the amount of time that people spend on activities such as entertainment and meals away from home at night supports local businesses.
In addition, the initiative supports Safer Streets by improving the public’s feelings of safety and security within the Little India Precinct and central Dandenong area more broadly.
The lighting has been implemented with consideration to the environment by using low energy 12V devices and operating on timers.
How is the project funded?
The investment was delivered in partnership with the Victorian Governments Community Infrastructure and Cultural Precincts Program and contributes to Little India’s cultural heritage and significance as Victoria’s designated Precinct.
