Project Overview
Large-scale historic images of the Dandenong Market have been used to brighten up a vacant property at 280 Lonsdale Street in central Dandenong.
The property owned by council had previously been damaged in a fire which affected the street view and interior.
The historic images, which now adorn the ground level shop-front windows and ground level rear wall, depict the site during the early 1900’s when it was the former location of the Dandenong Market. The treatment includes a text extract from The Dandenong Advertiser describing the former market in its heyday.
As the weekly market grew in size and patronage, hygiene and moving livestock presented many challenges for the town. The Dandenong Market opened on its new site in 1927 with a produce hall on the corner of Clow Street and stock market uses extending up Cleeland Street.
This project was a collaboration between the City Improvement Department and the Place Making and Revitalisation Team, with the images supplied courtesy of the Dandenong and District Historical Society.
The result reinforces the overall fine grain detail of the streetscape and provides pedestrians with a unique and captivating insight into the local story of its location.

Five years.
