Stockmans Bridge
The $29.5 million bridge on George Street in Dandenong includes a two-way road, pedestrian and bicycle access, street lighting and integrated artwork. The bridge is an important feature of the city’s transformation, making central Dandenong more accessible to locals and visitors.
The name Stockmans Bridge was chosen by the community, in recognition of the Dandenong livestock market, previously located at the site of the new bridge. The market was instrumental in the settlement of the area and has helped to define the city’s culture ever since.
People living off Cheltenham Road will benefit from convenient access to shops and services on the other side of the railway line. Drivers, cyclists and walkers will have an alternative route into town and this will take pressure off key entry points to Dandenong.
The joint project was a partnership between the City of Greater Dandenong, VicRoads, Places Victoria (formerly VicUrban) and the Dandenong Development Board.
Stockyard Artwork
The artwork mounted on both sides of the bridge is based on historical images and depicts the story of the former stock market which operated in Dandenong for more than 40 years.
The artwork entitled Stock Yard includes more than 60 metres of digital imaging and was created by artists Sinatra Murphy P/L after lengthy consultation with members of the local community. It follows a four-year process of detailed negotiation, planning and development.
There are three distinct elements to the artwork. The colours reflect the prosperity of Dandenong; the grassland texture is to honour the area’s indigenous past and the stock yard images show the site as it originally operated. The artwork sets a new aesthetic benchmark for the area and helps in ensuring the bridge is embraced by the community as the new gateway to Dandenong.
